NPDL Spring Recap

The NPDL’s 2023 Spring season was epic! We expanded our programming within Maine’s Department of Corrections and staged three unforgettable events:

  1. April 11-Boston College vs. Maine Correctional Center (MCC) Environmental Policy (Carbon-Tax)
  2. April 18-Harvard University vs. Maine Women’s Center (WC) Economic Policy (Paycheck Fairness Act)
  3. April 25-Wake Forest University* vs. Maine State Prison (MSP) Legal Policy (Abolishing LWOP)

Watch all three event videos on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@nationalprisondebateleague

By the numbers, 20 incarcerated students from 6 separate prisons had the opportunity to debate against 3 top collegiate debate teams, including the current national champions*, on important public policy issues. Additionally, volunteer coaches from 7 major universities and guest judges from 15 different colleges and organizations came together to support our programming. The results: NPDL teams have compiled an impressive 3-1 win-loss record overall since our official launch last Fall. While there will always be plenty of important policies to debate, no one can effectively argue against the human talent and intellectual capacity taking center stage at NPDL events.

True to our mission, bridges were built, stereotypes were shattered, minds were decarcerated, and the voices of marginalized people were resoundingly heard.  The communities we are building on both sides of prison walls are growing, and as we begin our programmatic expansion into new states this year our unique blend of social diplomacy will continue to transcend divisive barriers while uplifting us all.
